The most important element in coaching is the ability to establish and maintain trust, for without trust, there is no coaching. The relationship between the executive coach and coachee must be a sacred one. Only then can the coachee open his or her heart and envision things never seen before.

Executive coaching is about helping coachees clarify the path between Current Reality, where I am now, and Desired Future, where I want to be. Often times coachees are clear about their Desired Future and have tried many paths to get there, each ending with a failed result. This usually happens when Current Reality is not readily observable to the coachee.

The 360 degree feedback technique is used by executive coaches to help coachees to see things they have not been able to see in the past. This happens through skillful and supportive coaching, deep listening, and asking the right questions that allow the coachee to look within for the hidden answers.

The final phase is action planning, and this is where the role of coaching may change from deep listening and questioning to listening and often participating in a brainstorm of ideas.
